This was the Bee's Knee's about 6-8 years ago when using Vdub/Gknot etc.
The whole .avi scenario has slowed to a crawl ..... (Altho still very popular).
Today's TV's have media players Embedded which will deal with most formats,
Not just DivX as it was a few years back.
H264 mkv/mp4 is Today's preference for Myself. With Lossless Editing & very fast Lossless Re-Codes. My main App's for Lossless work are .... MKV Toolnix .... Xmedia ReCode .... VideoReDo .... & there's a cutter which is quite Good but Isn't mentioned much.. Mpg2Cut2
For a "Full" ReCode my pref is (Tipard MKV video Converter). VERY highly configurable outside of the UI @Local Settings\App Data\~\~\user_profile.data
- It will convert "Just about", .any to .any
DivXviD gets 5* for it's worth 8yrs ago. In reality tho...... 3* for still being there.

It's a great codec and I used it a lot before X264 came in. Still 5 stars from me for the effort. I think the DivX-XviD times should be past now...

This new version has a bug/problem when decoding videos at more then 100% their original size. The video pixelates badly.
I have tested many players to see if it was MPC's fault but it was not.
Hopefully, Koepi or the Xvid team addresses this soon.

This isn't an installer! Use XviD1.2.1.exe from http://www.digital-diges...52&ssid=0&did=1 instead I can suggest you to do so..

While the x264 quality becomes worse, I'm happy to see XviD quality going upward.

There is no comparison between Xvid & H.264 in terms of quality, is like compare MPEG1 with MPEG2, they are different generation of codecs.
Anyway, Xvid still being the best MPEG-4 ASP codec, and I find it incredible useful because of the low resource usage and the compatibility with old standalone dvd players.
For those that have top notch hardware and a nice plasma to enjoy the H.264 quality, yes probably there is no reason to continue using Xvid.

it is not bad it is alive again, but then again, I am with Artem...
why bother with DivX/Xvid nowadays? H.264 all the way...

Once it was the best MPEG4 video codec, nowadays I can't find an excuse of not using H.264 for all purposes.

Yeah it's srouce code only on the official website, but koepi @ http://koepi.info/ compiles it for people, and so do the guy(s) @ http://www.xvidvideo.ru/ I think (Has seperate x86 and x64 downloads there, site is in both english and russian and seems to be down at the time of writing this).
edit: h.264 and xvid are two different mpeg4 types (h.264 being mpeg4 part 10 which allows it to have same quality video at lower bitrate). I would probly use h.264 myself but my xbox1 with XBMC can't handle it too well. ^_^
