Publisher's Description
KeePass Password Safe is a free/open-source password safe or manager which helps you to manage your passwords in a secure way. You can put all your passwords in one database, which is locked with one master key or a key-disk. So you only have to remember one single master password or insert the key-disk to unlock the whole database. The databases are encrypted using the best and most secure encryption algorithms currently known (AES and Twofish).

Perfect for local password storage, as it should

I have stored all my account details for every site I've ever signed up on, 270 in total, and couldn't live without KeePass to help me keep track all usernames and passes. It's a joy to log in to a site and have it to auto-type required info simply by using a hotkey.
User friendly and light-weight. It has a clever password generator tool, etc..
Bust most importantly it's SAFE, everything is locked with a master password.
You can export the entire database to make backups, or if you want to use on other devices.

My favorite and primary password manager. A quick way to migrate between keepass versions [and maintain customizations] is to copy over these 3 files into the new keepass directory:
Database.kdbx
KeePass.exe.config
KeePass.config.xml
If you also use the keeform plugin, also copy these 3 files over:
KeeForm.exe
KeeRun.exe
KeeFormFF.exe

Cons: You have to manage sync by yourself

The greatest password protecting program ever written.
KayNine reviewed v2.1.0 on Mar 9, 2010
"requires .NET"... oh, come on!!! That really is NO reason for a low rating! .NET 2.0 is like "part of the OS" by now, so there's no longer need for extra installing the runtime (other like i.e. Java-based applications).
"used only by lazy programmers"??? Yeah, right... I'd better say by productive programmers, since Visual Studio is a great IDE. Furthermore .NET apps are MUCH safer than i.e. pure C++ (buffer overflows, pointers etc). And I guess you won't count Java-programmers "lazy", would you?
Anyway: KeyPass v2 is great, love the UI and simplicity. And regarding portability: there Is a portable version (yeees, requires .NET runtime on the PC, yada-yada). Though I agree that MOBILE KeePasses (Android, Java) only support v1 databases. Still... it's the best.

KeePass is a superb password manager. It now offers 2-channel auto-type obfuscation, to enhance the SAFE entry of private information (logins, passwords, user name, banking, etc). This feature is especially important if you want to defend against keyloggers stealing private information.

A world-class programmer? Based on just this application? Give me a break. It's a good application, but just give me a break.
I can tell you the problem I have with .NET:
* The applications are a pain to install because of the delay they induce when they "optimize" themselves (something that never seems to help anything).
* When .NET applications are installed, run, and configured, they create .NET-related crap on the system that DOES NOT get removed when the application is "uninstalled".
* The applications can be .NET Framework version dependent, and like every other normal person on Earth, I hate worrying about version dependencies.
* I hate having to have a monolithic "framework" installed in the first place.
* The thing I hate most about .NET is that it makes applications damned slow. This version of KPS is much slower than version 1.x, particularly at startup. It takes so long at first launch, I've decided I can't take it. I'm going back to 1.x.
I hate this version. Besides an aggravatingly-slow startup, interface problems and annoyances abound. I can no longer enable alternate row colors. The "grid lines" option doesn't work at all on my WinXP system. The window doesn't remember its maximized state. And does sorting work at all? No it doesn't--HAHAHAHA, now isn't that FUNNY?
Oh, I'm lovin' it! Testing? Ah, who needs it?
Try searching with the search toolbar. If you give the tree or list focus, the Tab key cannot be used to get back to the search bar (yes, I know about Ctrl+F, but I prefer the search bar).
Yeah, wonderful programming. Yeah, so nice to have .NET.
And if you don't agree, you can "Gin gudin qwi", as they say in Laotian.

"Good, but net must go."
This is like shouting at the wind. NET. is here to stay and expand. It certainly will not go anywhere. Because of .NET the KeePass can now run on Linux, Mac, BSD without need for contributed/unofficial KeePass builds.
"I honestly don't see any need for need, especially because we all know that author is an amazing coder. So why use net?"
Okay, so you admit that the guy is a world class programmer, but you still tell him how he should code?
What is exactly the problem that you have with .NET?

Great program, however I agree that no option to use the 1.x database is stupid. Seriously, compared to writing the program how hard could it really be?
So, I too am sticking with 1.14.

KeePass is a program that I use almost daily and it works great for me.
The new version looks like it has some good feature improvements. I was not happy about the .NET requirement at first but I understand the need for it. I am looking at the KeePass 2.x just to check it out but I am sticking with the 1.x version for daily use until the new generation becomes STABLE and .NET is more ubiquitous.

A good place for all your passwords and it is very userfriendly. You can even attach files to secure them. There is no spyware, malware or backdoor included. It is open source and if you don't believe you can check the source code and compile by yourself. It could be an expensive programm but it is totally free of duty. So come on and grab a copy.

Its a pity that they chose .Net as it will no longer run under WINE on Linux, so dual booters out there are better off sticking with the 1.xx versions. This Sucks.

@Diam0nd:
.NET is chosen, because of the flexibility of this language. Sure, there are some problems atm (alphastate) but i'm sure, they get the problems solved.
The v1 will be still developed in future, so anybody can chose between .NET and normal (dunno what the original language for v1 is).

zeon reviewed v2.02 Alpha on May 11, 2007
The author has stated that 1.x will stick around for a long time and he'll even continue to add some new 2.x-style features to it. So if you don't need or want the 2.x stuff then you don't need to upgrade now or in the near future. Personally I'm still using 1.x at the moment, but will probably have a look at 2.x when it's out of beta and see how I like it.
Anyway, this program is absolutely excellent and changed the way I use passwords online. I used to lose usernames and worry that one compromised password would endanger all my other accounts that used to same one. Now I just spend 5 seconds in KeePass whenever I make an account, hit the Generate button, and I've got a different password for every account I use--all just a few clicks away. And best of all, not only is the program excellent, it's 100% free and open source.
If I could rate KeePass 6 stars, I would. Essential software and one of the first 5 programs I'd install on a new PC.

KeePass 1x is still being developed and supported. So don't you worry your little heads about .Net
http://keepass.info/devstatus.html#status1x
KeePass 2x is being made to include some features that the writer just couldn't be bothered to implement himself without the help of .Net
So stick with KeePass 1x as it is the best and always will be.

1. I think switching to .NET was a BAD idea, since the only benefits I see in doing this is well, only for developer (but why do that? I bet he is huge in programming) 2. I won't ever rate KP lower than 5, its one of the best apps out there.
Still, .NET for THAT KIND OF APPLICATION is a bad idea. Yeah, Vista has net, how great is that? But how many PCs have Vista :)
EarlyMorningHours reviewed v2.02 Alpha on Apr 11, 2007
I do most of my programming under .NET2 (VB specifically). And I'm actually looking to go backwards and take up C/C++ in order to ditch the .NET dependancy when it is appropriate. In some cases .NET is very nice and convenient for the programmer, but there are also many downsides.
Anyway, this is a first class program and has been a favorite of mine for quite some time. The fact that it is free is great, but more important than that it is open source. I can't imagine that there are that many bugs that need to be ironed out in this "alpha". It seems quite stable to me as is. Excellent job.
deadmonkey reviewed v2.02 Alpha on Apr 11, 2007
I love KeePass, it is a fantastic app. I am also a little confused as to why they switched from a C++/MFC codebase to C# however the performance difference (from me testing it just now) is very minimal. As all Vista based machines already have .NET 2/3 installed that isn't so much of a problem (although it will be for some).
I am very impressed with how complete this Alpha is though. I was expecting just the core features to be implemented however they pretty much have everything working well. No crashes from half an hours use of playing with everything which is nice. Due to the nature that the databases are very small encryption performance doesn't really make any different even though it is .NET based however initial execution time was about 2 seconds compared to about 0.2 seconds for the old C++ based version. After the initial run though (when the assembly was cached) start up times were in the 1 second range which is perfectly acceptable.
Portability is still there however however, as mentioned, .NET 2 is required on the system but this is no different to when we first saw VB apps back in the 90s and Windows 95/NT not having the VB Runtimes installed.
All in all still an excellent program. Still fast, powerful and easy to use. I fail to see exactly what benefits switching development language brings to the end user however so far it doesn't seem to have caused any major problems.
Promitheas reviewed v2.01 Alpha on Apr 6, 2007
I don't like either the .NET prerequisites. So I won't leave 1.06 version yet. But I must admit and all must do, that KeePass is the best password manager out there and it's totally free! So it deserves 5 stars!
anonymouscowturd reviewed v2.01 Alpha on Mar 26, 2007
Amen to Diam0nd. Totally agree on both points. The whole point with KeePass is that i can put the thing on a usb stick, secure the info and use it on any windows machine. With the old version this is true. It means the new version is completely non-portable and useless on a usb key unless i am sure that the machines i use will have .net 2 installed. How likely is that if i use it in some internet cafe? Also it is much slower to start up becuase of .net 2. It's still a good program but it's just lossed 50% of the reason why i use it. I for one will be sticking to 1.06 which is second to none.
Diam0nd reviewed v2.01 Alpha on Mar 26, 2007
Great effort, but I really do not approve the new .NET-based core, since not all PCs have .net installed AND its slower.
