Publisher's Description

REAPER is a powerful but sensible Windows application that lets you record, arrange, edit, and render multi-track waveform audio. It provides an extensive set of features, but is a very small and lightweight application (the installer is less than 1 megabyte, and includes many effects and a sample project).

REAPER supports ASIO, Kernel Streaming, WaveOut, and DirectSound for playback and recording. It reads WAV, OGG, and MP3 files, and records WAV files. You can arrange any number of items in any number of tracks and use audio processing plug-ins (DirectX and Jesusonic). REAPER also supports volume, pan controls and envelopes per track, multi-layer undo/redo, and user creatable color themes.

Great for price. Blows away ProTools.

While waiting for PT to boot, you can do half of the song in Reaper. Just one of the many examples... I simply gave up on PT as it's not worth the trouble. DigiDesign is also a very crappy corporation, it's hardware is total cra*, not worth the trouble, too. They just want to have your money, lots of it. c***os on the other hand is a completely different story.

One of the Best and Easiest to get started up and running true Pro Recording Software out there at an unbelievable Price ! Reaper is both Very Powerful and Easy to use. I do not know about other Musicians and Sound Engineers/Producers and Song Writers out there, but, what I can say is the Reaper Software is as good and or better than Pro Tools or any other Recording Software out there at any price, Period !!!!. And it only gets better and even more powerful as time goes by. The Reaper Software Updates released on a regular basis and also a big plus is the Reaper Software Programmers actually do listen to their User Base !!! Wow', now if we could only get Congress, GM and Chrysler to listen to us.......? Na', that will never happen........

The spirit of quality shareware shines through this magnificent application, priced at 40$ nothing can't compare price/feature/quality/support wise to Reaper.

Programmed with talent, love and dedication from the Internets No.1 Punk!, Justin Frankel, which gave us Winamp and started the P2P revolution with Gnutella, Reaper is destined to become sooner than later THE Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) app.

I wont detail the vast array of features and love this program has, i advise you to visit the official site at http://www.reaper.fm/ and give a good look especially at the forums.

In conlusion, The Best True Shareware program for the Windows and soon the OSX platform.

nice software, but need to be consistent in copy and paste ,,

For example ,,

copy selected area of selected item ,, when you paste them it paste only one of the selected item not all of them as expected,,

This feature is very much needed as you compile different tracks and you need to repeat that compilation ,, otherwise this is very much promising software,,

Best audio app out there. Turns your computer into a nice little digital studio. You get everything you need with it. Install Reaper and Foobar and you don't need anything else for audio in your comp. You can even route Foobar through Reaper with ReaRoute ASIO driver.

About the development: this app was developing quite rapidly at the time, but now the development is more steady-like and regular. It's not to get the attention. It's just that there was so many things to do...

It's a huge refreshment in the DAW world so you can finally forget about those expensive mega-audio-apps [and mega bucks].

After seeing Reaper, I'd buy Cubase if it were 9.99, and then just maybe :-).

Im so sick of seeing this program listed. He is deliberately doing putzy little updates to keep this program listed as a new beta version. This site should put a minimum time frame in which a program be listed as having a new update. I mean this thing is mentioned DAILY for what now, MONTHS, nearly a year or something like that.

This program must not be selling too well if the daily updates done in desperation of attention is needed....

Paul Skinner, that's not a novel statement at all. I've seen it numerous times, the most popular case (that I can remember at the moment) being the original versions of Winamp. Nightwolf...
Never visited the web site, just downloaded the releases and checked them out...for what is is worth, I just checked the web site, and it says nothing of the sort about going from freeware to shareware...If I have to drill down somewhere to find that out, it would never have happened anyway. No worries mate, I'm just one user who will buy when I see something worth buying...Not that this is not worth the price...just in IMHO, there are better values for the money...Agree or disagree...no problem for me either way...
Have a nice day...

seier: You bring a very valid question -- what's the difference?

Audacity is an open source alternative to wave editing applications such as Sound Forge and older versions of CoolEdit.

CoolEdit gained features to start competing against industry giant DigiDesign's ProTools and other studio software such as Cubase SX.

One of the big differences between a wave editor and studio software is in hardware support.

Adobe Audition (CoolEdit), Cubase SX, and ProTools all support ASIO devices - recording equipment that focuses on digitally capturing input with low latency. I use an mBox which is an ASIO device. The idea of playing music live while listening to the other tracks and having the lowest latency possible makes using software beyond a simple wave editor necessary.

Another difference is that REAPER will allow post-processing effects that aren't simply effects that are rendered. Adding effects from equipment or from Jesusonic (which in and of itself is amazing technology) as 'sends' which are like a layer effect in Photoshop is another difference.

Now, if you talk to a studio recorder, they could probably list 20 other things, but yes, there's a huge difference -- but only really if you are looking for studio-quality software.

Audacity is excellent software, and I prefer it over SoundForge and yes, I like the interface quite a bit more than REAPER's at this point. I can't use recording equipment with Audacity though - but I sure can plug in a PC Microphone and record a bit and make some fun, easy recordings.

Despite some flaws it's a good piece of sotware. With almost daily updates I'm sure all existing problems will be solved fast. Some new will be added too...
And, it's the only one FREEWARE decent multitrack software on the market. So if you don't want to spend hundreds of dollars just to be able to record your homemade song this is definitely a great tool. It will always have highest rating from me as long as it stays free.

regwebb

I'm another totally blind screen reader user, and I like the degree of keyboard support. As has been mentioned elsewhere, I can't find any method for selecting tracks via check boxes, or some other accessible method. Also, on an admittedly cursory inspection, I couldn't find how to arm tracks for recording. If there are plans for highly graphical features, such as a time line for loops ETC, if the relevant information can be entered via dialogues, then the potential customer base for this program can be as wide as possible. Good luck with future development.

tipsyboy

tipsyboy reviewed v0.61 Beta on Feb 7, 2006

Satisfactory recording, editing and wav-saving. The GUI is kind of "watery" though. Nice built-in filters and stuff.

Bad is the fact that VST-Plugins won't show up with their real adjustment possibilities, so to load them into the list is rather useless.

Well, nice try. Needs a lot of work before it can compare to standard audio software. Good for those who just want to do some home recording.

The program has great potential; however, there are issues with regards to accessibility to screen reading programs. One example of this is the inability to check or uncheck items with the SpaceBar; (a windows standard function.)

A suggestion would be to provide the ability to create a user defined keyboard mapping functionality. This capability would enable screen reader users to avoid key comflicts with their computer speech programs.

Good work.
