I don't like the limit on the free version so I'm still using the last fully free version. I'll probably pay for the pro version one day, I can't begrudge the dude for wanting to make money off his work. I've tried a lot of renaming programs, but after becoming familiar with this one I just don't like any others, and using presets in this one is great. It makes things as simple as it can but it's really powerful.

I have used ReNamer for a long time and in some tricky situations. It has served me well, saved me a lot of time, and saved me from errors I might have made manually renaming lots of files.

I had expected to someday donate money to the program author. With the split between the Lite and Pro versions, it was time to follow through on my good intentions and pay for the product. I am finding the Pro version even better than the free version that I had been using.

Crippleware as detailed on their website. Not paying $20 just to have unlimited presets, there are definitely better options for that price (or comparable for free).

Was my favorite free file renamer, but after version 5.70 it's crippled and not even worth downloading now. If you want a pay version better options are available.

Listing crippleware as freeware is the ultimate insult. No matter how "good" a product is, to milead users with something like this is beyond reproach. I think Betanews should require the true nature of all products offered here.

I understand that developers want to be compensated for their work and have no problem with that. What I despise is situations like this and will not use a program that is crippled with the intent of getting paid. You will get a better acceptance with a full working copy with a time limit (30 days etc). I stopped using any program that requires me to "rebuy" it every time they feel like changing the version number and make some simple change just to get additional funds..

If you are a photographer (as I am) and want a good rename program for your thunbnails, then try ThumbsPlus. It is trial ware and gives you the time to see how it works and is reasonably priced. Works well and is well worth the money..

ReNamer has split up into Lite and Pro editions, where Lite is limited to non-commercial usage and has limit of a maximum of 5 rules and 5 presets at a time (you can still remove them and create new once endlessly).

The project simply could no longer survive without financial support, in order maintain the development. There is a full explanation and reasoning behind this unfortunate but a necessary move published on the forum, please read it here: http://www.den4b.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=1851

In regards to "OAKsider" and "smaragdus" comments. I am very sorry to hear about your disappointment, but I hope that it will be compensated by the continued development and support for years to come, rather than a dead project and complete abandonment of all products.

Thanks for the news, smaragdus. You are absolutely correct, sadly. The new Lite (freeware) version is limited to 5 presets and 5 rules, which is a significant downgrade (if not unusable) for many users of ReNamer. The Pro version is over $20. I believe I've donated to the author at least once, but don't expect that to go towards a Pro license.

The last free version of ReNamer was 5.71. Since then ReNamer exists in two versions- Lite, which is a severely crippled Demo, and Pro- which is the ReNamer prior to version 5.72 but costs 14.95 EUR. The Lite is absolutely useless while there are really good and even better alternatives to Pro.

Totally, absolutely, positively excellent. Tiny, infinitely customizable ReNamer that does it all. Just try it.

Once you've built yourself a nice little collection of presets, you suddenly realize what a beautifully simple, yet effective program this really is. Soon you find yourself using it more and more and not even bothering to give the others more than a passive glance.

Many Shareware authors would be shamed by the quality of support that Denis gives in his forum. Great software, nice dude! :)

Superb! I just recently needed to change filenames from format "PRODCODE.jpg" to "someprefix--prodcode_lowercased.jpg" and Batch File Renamer 2.51 which I tried first simply had a bug which caused it to change all but 1 file!! This software has no bugs so far and is muchhhh more intelligent! Awesome find...

zridling, and after a whole year you came back here again to remind us that this app is terrible and does not deserve even two points (previously you have changed your rating from 1 up to 3 after my comment). Seems that you hate this program SO MUCH. It does not allow you to fall asleep? I shall try to guess, you have subscribed for this program to set 1 point after every update. Why you repeat the comments?

Looks very powerful. Portable too like rename master (silly thing) is natively. Thank god I understand rename master's gui. This one has a learning curve and I can't be bothered.
Why the metatag support if it doesn't access freedb and have album art support as well? nonsense

EXTREMELY well written software!

I got worried that Author had lost his hard drive on 6/july:

Last weekend, something really bad has happened. My laptop's hard-disk started making a really worrying (as experts say "grinding") noise. I started backing up all of the data. It was not long before the hard-disk has stopped making that horrible noise, and when it stopped making it - it actually stopped spinning. That was all it said, and not one attempt of rebooting would make it detectable by BIOS. Since then, 2 companies have already seen the drive, and tried to recover any data, without any success.

I was wondering what future Renamer should be. I am really glad he made his statment "ReNamer will be going through a constant development".

I just donated AUTOHOTKEY (http://www.autohotkey.com) $20 ; next month I will donate renamer for shure! :)

thanks den4b! :D

I think this is THE BEST RENAMER ever made!! Truly impressive, with all its rules and hidden features like meta tags! I was checking around 20-30 different renamers, and all of them together wouldn't compensate for this handy little tool. Its developer is open for suggestions, and he has implemented a feature that I've asked for, so I'm very happy with it :)

djmilz, why do you keep posting each time an update gets released? We all know that you love your silly rename master, so stop spamming here ;)

zridling and dhry, have the same story, fell in love with flexible renamer, but keep spamming here for some reason ;)

Disappointed that it doesn't run on Win 95.
Two things: 1) Betanews and similar sites should stop writing most of the time Win All or Win9x (meaning 98/ME, while it means 95/98) when only selected programs (gems) still run on 95
2) the developers themselves should ALWAYS list the exact, tested system requirements. I'd avoid long downloads, hopes and tons of error messages.
But I already know that my desire will be never satisfied. Just continue with Win All to mean XP/2003/Vista:-(

Good at what it does. I still prefer Rename Master to anything out there, but I am glad to see the development continue on this app.

I especially like the "close the program after successful rename" option.

ReNamer solved a need I had for adding random alpha characters (A-Z) to the beginning of a bunch of file names. Using scripting it was very easy to do this. Have not seen any other renamer that would allow me to add random alpha characters like this, usually they add random numbers only.

cricri_pingouin

cricri_pingouin reviewed v4.17 on Oct 9, 2006

I'm afraid that this one isn't my cup of tea either. It's not bad, but I find other alternatives more efficient (Rename Master to name one).
If it supported Unicode, than it would stand out of the crowd as I'm struggling to find any batch renaming tool supporting Unicode. Not that this does not come into account into my rating.

zridling

zridling reviewed v4.12 on Aug 14, 2006

Of course I know the difference. But after using ReNamer throughout its trial period, it takes too much time to the simplest operations, that's all. There are several good renamers available, but if I were "paid," I'd name them, don't you think? Use what works for you, but for me, ReNamer does not.

antigin

antigin reviewed v4.10 on Jul 31, 2006

Yes, slow a little, you right, but this new "add rule" model is amazing! Simple and clever, ease of use and great. I said Rename Master thanks and bye-bye.
zridling, may be you don't know what means Insert, Delete, Case, RegEx etc? What there is cumbersome to use and confusing? If all-in-one-big-window with lots of tabs, cells and textboxes is much convenient , that you are really strange focused person. Looks like the paid comment.

I don't get the exception in V4.1 (running XP Sp2) unless 'always on top' is turned on

A fixed version will be out shortly - so until then, just untick the 'always on top' option and you'll be fine

I use it a lot - the features are fantastic and the author is extremely helpful and receptive to ideas :-)

These features have been added since V4
* Added checkboxes for rules, to enable/disable rules without deleting them;
* Files that are not marked will not be validated, previewed or renamed;
* Fixed not synchronized states for files table and files objects on rename;
* Fixed incorrect validation when absolute paths are used in new names;
* Fixed incorrect capitalization of letters infront apostrophe in the words;
* Fixed waiting cursor and memory leak on exception in the preview process;
* Added skip extension and case sensitive options to Replace and Remove rules;
* Added mark by mask option to the context menu of the files table;
* Added WideGetChar function, workaround for a bug in the PascalScript which
doesn't let access characters of a WideString by their index, e.g. WideString[I];
* Added WideLength, WideSetLength, WideCopy, WideDelete, WideInsert,
WidePos and WidePosEx functions to correctly treat WideStrings;
* Added WideSplitString function to split string into an array of strings;
* Added WideScanDir function to scan directory for files
* Updated many other PascalScript Unicode functions;
* Updated help file for the Regular Expressions rule;

jinno

jinno reviewed v4.00 on Jul 23, 2006

Fair to good. But it has been giving access violation problems even with v 4.1 ( 4.0 was OK
and 3.2 was OK.) Renamer uses ini file. "ini" file created by renamer when used first time.
If this ini file exists in the folder ( and of course it exists as it creates it by itself.)
it gives access violation. And if you delete ini
and double clikc renamer.exe, voi la, no access violation. And you specify several items and it
adds information into ini file, then, when you
use renamer.exe next time, access violation.
Good thing is that the author has FORUM.

I will only give v4.x a 3 because while the "engine" is great, I feel the author ruined the interface with v3.0. I still use v2.35 because it's really fast to turn rules on and off, and to actually change the rules quickly.

I use the program to rename MP3 dirs after my highly evolved standard (I don't use ID3 tags for organizational reasons), and v4 is just way too slow and cumbersome. It's probably great for people who just keep the same rules (or presets) over and over again and don't have the change them slightly for every new dir/set of files.

If you find the interface slow, do yourself a favour and get the old v2.35 and see if that doesn't work better for you!

And if you know any pascal/delphi then the ability to write your own code is really useful.
I tend to do that more than anything else now
