A codec is a piece of software that can code and/or decode audio and video documents. (greater facts right here: http://windows.Microsoft...s-often-asked-questions)
Do you want the k-lite codec p.C.? Properly that depends, there are humans that swear by way of them and do not seemingly have any issues with them, but i in my view sense that the crashes that necessarily come aren't really worth the hassle. (i'm one that has a tendency to push my computer to its restrict so if there may be a crash that could probably show up, it likely does.) i am sure not all of us will revel in crashes.
My idea is to no longer use a codec p.C.. In case you discover that there may be a media file that you want to play however can't, that you go to the website of the people who make the codec and get it from there as it have to be the maximum updated and there's regularly aid alternatives available on the web site if you stumble upon troubles. Codec packs additionally generally tend to put in way extra stuff than you want significantly growing the possibility of crashes and potently impacting the performance of your computer. This can be mitigated with a selective installation, however then in case you knew what to pick, then you may as properly get the files from the source.
When you have little or no concept what i'm talking about then a codec percent may be a viable choice initially as it is able to get you via in the short time period. Then you could educate yourself as you're able and deal with possible crashes as they occur.

Hello Firenze do you have any knowledge about codecs in general? It doesn't seems like you do. Klite is one of the best set of codecs you can get if you just know how to use it. You know, there's a reason why Klite is rated so high, and that is because people out there think it's the best set of codecs you can get. But anyway, against stupidity, even gods are fighting in vain.

The only problem I've had with these packages is.
I work in real estate & a large part of my business is making virtual tours of houses and property and reviewing them before posting them on my web sites.
After I install any of these K-Lite packs, my virtual tours stop working on my machine. I've tried the configuring options on the packs & it doesn't help.
I can't uninstall and do a system restore & fix the problem, because it doesn't fix the problem. I have to wipe the drive and re-install everything.
I'd say that is a pretty big problem.
I give this 4 stars because it does what it is made to do.
If I didn't have the problem that I do, I'd give it a 5.

- If you already have codec pack version 5.1.0 - 5.1.6 installed, this update upgrades it to version 5.1.8, and includes newest versions of ffdshow, MediaInfo, and the Codec Tweak Tool.
- If your version is older than 5.1.0, then you need to download the complete installer instead of the update!

But KLCP does that and much, much more. If you're a hardcore retrogamer, if you ever need to use even the most forsaken codecs, KLCP is the One. It supports almost everything (except maybe DXA movies, but maybe it's a matter of time).

Prospero424 reviewed v06/06/07 on Jun 7, 2007
KLCP has specifically been designed around ffdshow. It will not "damage" performance or compatibility.
And far from installing outdated versions, KLCP is actually one of the best ways to keep ffdshow up to date.
Packaging ffdshow with complementary codecs in the manner that KLCP has does NOT degrade performance, and I defy anyone to explain why it would, much less provide proof.
Don't listen to those who only wish to spread inaccurate FUD and underrate good software in some attempt to pimp their pet player/package. Let this software stand on its own merits, of which it has plenty.
runningfool reviewed v06/06/07 on Jun 6, 2007
quoted from ffdshow's wikipedia page:
"Codec packs have been known to damage ffdshow's performance in the past. Some will override ffdshow or disrupt proper video display, and almost all will install outdated ffdshow versions."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ffdshow
if youre going to use a codec pack, this is probably the best one. unfortunately most users are unaware that including codecs AND ffdshow degrades performance.

Probably the only thing you need in your computer [if using Windows] to play 99.9% of all the different video and audio files you encounter on web or dl etc.

No glitches to report 'so far' while on Vista...except for failure to updare ffdshow-- a re-install while in Safe Mode should solve that inconsequential oddity.
Wguru: take up your beef with the particular file host...give THEM a 1.
BTW some time ago there was some pirate similarly-named codec site that would foist malware on one's system with this codec pack...It's a dangerous world out there Virginia, but hopefully you'll only rate something you've actually installed & used...in the future?
Pkshadow: plenty of false-positives out there..what's YOUR opinion of its performance in the intervening after you installed it?
Stonger: i got that GSpot error message once last year--but not since...

@wguru: Why give something a low rating just because of a corrupt download from a site it doesn't even originate from? I suggest getting it from BetaNews (100% trusted) or codecguide.com (its home). Learn to navigate the net.

What in the world do corrupt downloads have to do with the quality of software? An MD5 hash would be nice, I suppose, but -please-, get a working version and rate the product. Which is awesome, by the way, never had any problems with it. 5 stars.

Afterdawn must have screwed up. Get it from Betanews or the main website instead.
wguru reviewed v02/12/07 on Feb 19, 2007
If the codec pack is so safe, then why are there so many reporting their download is corrupt? Ref. repeated downloads from http://www.afterdawn.com...ite_codec_pack_full.cfm
Plus why's that site's download of this thing (klcodec284f.exe version 2.8.4.0) 3.81 Mb and this sites supposedly exact same download of klcodec284f.exe version 2.8.4.0 is 17.4 Mb? Too much funny business for me to even consider installing this.

At first I disliked codec packs and sorts and used several guides to "tweak" codecs and everything but it never turned out as great as they're telling you but anyways this codec pack is great, especially because you can use the tweak tool to find broken codecs and fix system sound.
I watch lots of videos with varied extensions and I have no problem whatsoever with playing them.

Only a 3-rate because I have a problem.
I am sure that somebody will be able to point me to the solution.
I want to play DVD-movies on my PC.
I do not have any media player except Windows Media Player 11.
I also do not want to install any other player.
The above means that I cannot view DVD movies on my PC - right ?
What did I do ?
I installed K-lite Mega 161
Default installation.
Can I view DVD movies ? The answer is no !
That's why I uninstalled K-lite Mega 161, because = no use.
Then I installed XP coded pack.
Default installation.
Can I view DVD movies ? The answer is YES !
My question :
Whatis the problem with K-lite in this case ?

KLCP will work with *ANY* DirectShow player, including Windows Media Center. It doesn't install many codecs at all in the default profile. It will certainly not harm your system.
MPlayer still needs improvement, specially the GUI front-ends.
VLC works great, but has an awful GUI, so you need to find a skin that you like.
urbanriot reviewed v11/07/06 on Nov 7, 2006
Good if you want to cause all sorts of system instability with unnecessary codecs. Try using freeware and opensource players that will play all the files you need without compromising your system - like mplayer or vlc.

No mistakes and failures in assembly K-LITE MEGA CODEC PACK 1.53 are present. At any viewing, preliminary, in a window, in any player, in any place! So why new updating gives glitches... I think a problem in a package of updating of codecs. Strange only that even if at updating codecs without installation DivX 6.2.5 failures all equally appear.
dzjepp reviewed v6/27/06 on Jun 27, 2006
The explorer crashing problem is because under winxp avi previewing is turned on at default, you need to turn this off otherwise browsing divx files will make explorer crash. It's not the codec packs problem, it's a problem with windows that was never fixed.
The newest updates to this codec pack allow you to turn off avi previewing during the install process.
Great pack as always.

It has come to my attention that BS Player now contains adware; specifically, WhenU, beginning with version 1.38. The original K-Lite Mega Codec Pack version 1.50 included BS Player v.1.36. This new patch includes BS Player v.1.39, which leads me to suspect that it is infected with WhenU. Can anyone confirm this?
