Publisher's Description

Tor is free software and an open network that helps you defend against traffic analysis, a form of network surveillance that threatens personal freedom and privacy, confidential business activities and relationships, and state security.

The Tor network is a group of volunteer-operated servers that allows people to improve their privacy and security on the Internet. Tor's users employ this network by connecting through a series of virtual tunnels rather than making a direct connection, thus allowing both organizations and individuals to share information over public networks without compromising their privacy. Along the same line, Tor is an effective censorship circumvention tool, allowing its users to reach otherwise blocked destinations or content. Tor can also be used as a building block for software developers to create new communication tools with built-in privacy features.

Tor is beneficial for everyone who prefers to continue their online activity out the eyes of marketers, Providers, and sites. This involves those getting around censorship rules within the nation, persons trying to mask their Ip, or anybody else who doesn't even want personal surfing habits connected to them

While you are using a VPN in combination with Tor Users get all of the privacy and security needed to prevent snoops, hackers, ISPs, and government monitoring.

Connect your IP address and you'll connect to any region VPN server like UK etc which encrypts your connection.
The application is subsequently forwarded to the destination by at least three relays.

Pros: It's free: Tor is free and open-source.
Hides your information: It hides your IP and other data while browsing websites.
Network security: The websites you open in this network are secured and encrypted.
Democratic activities: You can do democratic activities easily by using tor
All Internet Content Is Accessible

Cons: Drawbacks: While your data is encrypted along each of the relay nodes, the final connection point at the last relay in the chain can be compromised if the requested site does not use SSL. Tor has a known drawback of substantially slowing down your browsing because of the numerous hops your data is relayed through

@JKooks: That article is only partially true and aimed at those who don't understand how the onion network works. For example, there is no exit node if one stayed within the onion network where the URL address ends with ".onion".. And those who want more security should download the Linux distro named "TAILS" anyway. It's completely open source and the fingerprint isn't going to match your usual unsecured operating system. Heck, you can even run it off of a live CD or a thumb drive making it easy to conceal from the police. And for those who may still be paranoid about their activities should search for the term "wardriving" and learn how to protect yourself at your end even further

As for this update, it probably has something to do with the FBI recently injecting spyware into the onion servers of a convicted paedophile. Those who visit these servers can become infected if their TOR Bundle hasn't been updated and still is running on Firefox 17. Those who have Firefox 17 can become infected through iframes and malicious java script so it's a good idea to update your TOR bundle.

Tor is a response to government intrusion into our privacy, plain and simple. And no matter what they do, we are always ahead of them in terms of technology, and we always will be. The people who work for government are completely retarded, go get your drivers licence renewed and you'll see what I mean.

They are pushing us to make an entirely anonymous web, all they have to do it stop pushing and we'd probably stop making it. But since they are too retarded to stop, we have no choice but to continue.

A recent news report on BBC which I can't find showed TOR is being used by the depraved among us to access child abuse etc. Though these are in the minority those hosting TOR need to be aware of at least in the UK indecent material just passing though their servers can implicate them despite being innocent themselves & resulted in this case of PC gear being seized.

The flip side is recently I visited a large Caribbean island where internet restrictions are draconian & totally suppresses residents being able to access information that may be deemed to be against the state (basic freedom of information) & for these people who can actually own PC’s proxy servers are a lifeline to factual information although the restrictions I saw are so tight the likes of TOR are no longer that helpful.

If anyone wants to do some research on this topic check out the ENORMOUS installation that the NSA is building in Utah. Why do they need all those computers? To watch the rest of the world? No. To watch their own citizens!

In a society where governments love to snoop illegally on their populaces (The U.S.A. comes immediately to mind) and Big Business loves to invade privacy for the the interests of profit, why wouldn't someone want the best degree of privacy they could get?

The apologists for the other side often use the hackneyed rubiish that "if you have nothing to hide, you won't worry about who's watching". That excuse has been used by totalitarian regimes so often throughout history that it's beyond laughable.

Who watches the watchers? Why Themselves of course.

Right.

Products like these make governments nervous. It makes law enforcement nervous. That's a good thing. it keeps them honest, a characteristic that's sadly missing from both offices. The clods with their heads in the sand who say otherwise are the sheep that get preyed upon by same.

The amusing thing is that those same governments and law enforcement agencies have their own projects to achieve absolute anonymity on the Internet - but none of the apologists ever seem to mention that. The U.S. government wants to outlaw products like TOR - but are more than happy to use them .

Level the playing field.

Support products like this.

FIVE stars for the concept and necessity, FOUR for the execution.

This is pretty good but the FBI and other parties can still exploit java or Adobe to monitor you if you are using Windows or Apple. If you want to be real private you should use a Linux program called Liberty Linux that boots to a USB flash drive and you can use TOR from there. This way all of your tracks will be left on the thumb drive which you can easily hide off site and not on your computer's hard disk should it be confiscated by the authorities and subjected to a series of forensic tests. http://dee.su/liberte

@DKDude
If you are a foe in the eyes of any government, you do nor want to use Facebook to communicate strategies with others. If you are a government official, you do not want to communicate top secrets via Facebook. If you are whistle blower, you do not want to use Facebook and remain anonymous. If you want to buy weed online, you do not want to use eBay. There are many reasons why people would need this privacy. The government's attempt to enforce parental control on the web is pretty much futile with TOR. But you should realize that the government and the FBI also have their own private encrypted onion network that nobody knows about except maybe a few high tech spy's who have infiltrated the company through various means and they are intelligent enough not to communicate with one another over the net otherwise.

'The lady doth protest too much methinks' - William Shakespeare ~

@HeilNizar - Why give it one star when it can be used for perfectly legitimate reasons? One UK PC site I frequent has no less than 9 separate trackers.

I use TOR occasionally & many, many things in life can go from totally harmless to highly illegal in use, don't paint everyone with the same brush it's offensive.

I also don't understand the need for expletives on a software review site, it does a persons credibility no good whatsoever & makes their reviews invalid.

@DKDude: If you have ‘nothing' to hide why use the monicker 'DKDude' instead of your full name? And lets see your home address including Post Code / ZIP - Add your email addresses too - And how about your land-line & mobile number too - If you use Facebook or Twitter etc. your ID & password or is everything set on Public level? - Don't forget your IP if yours is a none dynamic IP address - And finally how about your WI-Fi code & a 'Google Street Map' URL of your home & I could add more to this list.

(Of course the above is a massive exaggeration but your full name & home/work address, IP & email will do)

Now would that be wise or sensible for you to give that amount of information out on a public forum? Plain stupid even perhaps?

Now I want you to tell me why 'you personally' don't give that information out on a pretty safe forum 'but' at the same time take into consideration your own statement that you have >nothing to hide< ~

Nothing? Are you really sure about that?

(Your reply will be fascinating to read)

@HeilNizar - You miss my point & I already use Ghostery, as far as I am aware you DKDude & myself all reside in the EU - We have pretty much free lives & can go where we wish on the net for information, be in what political party we wish to be in or support & as long as we do nothing illegal we are left we are left alone to live our lives as we wish.

However, many people on earth do not have the same freedom that we enjoy, actually ‘most’ people don't on earth do not have those rights. We have the freedom of religion, the freedom of political affiliation & far more & for some TOR may be a way of accessing information that we can access without any issues but they cannot, if you don't understand this you haven't traveled the world much at all - I have -

One large country (land of the free) 5000 miles to the south-west of the UK 95%+ of the population have never left the country so have little or no concept or comprehension of lack of freedom of information in other places - I have -

The other aspect of a tool such as TOR is where a person may wish to visit a website without the owner knowing - Your IP, OS, browser, geographical location (often to within metres), ISP, internet connection type, cookies, (therefore history of other sites you have visited) all of which is sent out to each & every site you visit - 99.9999% of the time for me this is no problem. For me occasionally I visit a couple of competitors business sites to have a look round (fully legally) yet may not want the owner to know as they do mine also!

There are lots off totally legal uses for TOR & it's plain stupid to brand each user of TOR as a sexual deviant & to be blunt shows crass stupidity of the highest order. I don't have TOR installed either on Windows or Linux but I will defend the rights of those who use it legally & not brand all users of it as perverts, & if you don't understand that you ought too.

The bottom line is there is no anonymity on the internet what ever you do, but for some on earth the likes of TOR & proxy servers can mean to have & see what we consider basic human rights. As i made the point to DKDude we all have something to hide & quite rightly, it’s called privacy, not secrecy that’s why we have door’s curtains & none transparent walls on our homes & don’t bath on our front lawns (well I don’t anyway).

The quote at the beginning of this review:
'The lady doth protest too much methinks' - William Shakespeare ~

Look up the meaning of quote that as you obviously haven't - Here is a start for you: If some users only comment's of a software program (or anything else in life) concern only sexual deviancy & nothing else, any person is risking others thinking they may be doing or thinking of that yourself:- It's a well known human behavior trait & accepted by many psychologists as a bordering on factual as it does show a pattern of thinking.

@Keverin ~ People such as you & HeilNizar really make me wonder? It seems you have one track minds, there are many fully legal users for Tor, there is no such thing as anonymity on the net & people who have half a brain realise that.

But as you feel the need to use expletives & mention a set of people that fortunately compose a small percent of the population I can only wonder if you are part of that evil percentage? ~ What's with the major anger towards a program? Tor and its derivatives, forks, and other ancillary programs (Opera Tor, XeroBank, etc.), along with anything that sincerely works in the name of protecting user privacy and security online and off, should be categorized as Essentialware. Those who decry its (legitimate!) use as good for nothing but good-for-nothings obviously don't see the necessity of protecting one's privacy and user choice online, especially if one is in a repressive environment such as China, the Middle East, or Russia (and more so everyday, the U.$. of A-holes). Know that no system or innovation is perfect, and just about anything can be used for ill-gotten gains; keep in mind this quote from the man whose likeness is (ironically) printed on so many bank notes held by the powers that be, at least in the land of the (formerly) free and the home of the slaves --

"Those who would sacrifice the good of liberty for the price of security deserve neither liberty nor security." --Benjamin Franklin

Everyone should RTFM before using this, though. To paraphrase good old Mick & Keith, it's just a click away -- torproject.org is where you'll find everything you ever wanted to know about Tor but were afraid/reluctant/etc. to ask.

One word of recommendation: I would advise folks to check out the new Tor fork known as Obfsproxy -- it's a modification of the original Tor Portable with Firefox, along with a secondary proxy application known as Obfs (for "obfuscation") Proxy. It's not yet available in the regular (installable) Tor distribution, and is still in beta stages, but it is worth a try:

torproject.org/projects/obfsproxy.html.en

Also have a look-see at (and please do your best to support!) the numerous other projects that are underway with the interest of protecting user privacy: Duck Duck Go, RiseUp.net, A/I Collective, TAILS (The Amnesiac Incognito Live System, a specialized Debian Live CD configured for use with Tor), and I2P, among others. Educate yourselves, and realize first and foremost that the software is only as effective as the person(s) using it.

Now boldly go where no onion (not even the eponymous fake news outlet) has ever gone before.

@dudeboyz.
Yes, other programs need to be configured to use tor.
For example,
In utorrent there is an option for proxy type.
Select Type "Socks5" Proxy "127.0.0.1" Port "9050"
Now if tor is running utorrent will use it which anonymizes your ip.
All the firefox plugin does really is pre configure the above for you

I do the same with Opera and then choose a US proxy when I want to use pandora.com which is blocked for users outside of the US

The main version, the one not bundled with portable Firefox, works fine with the Firefox I have installed - except for Flash videos on various sites, it seems.

But that aside, I don't understand the extent of the protection.

If I fire up Outlook for email, is that also protected? What about IE?

Do individual apps have to be programmed to be made aware of Tor? Or perhaps like Firefox, do you have to have a plug-in or add-on for a specific app like Outlook or Outlook Express?

Thanks for any help.

But bottom line is that it works as advertised while browsing. But I don't know if it masks downloads, either direct or bit torrent, though I have read you are not supposed to do bit torrent with Tor for a variety of reasons.

HeilNizar (what an appropriate name, considering the attitude) is using the same old hackneyed excuse by authoritatians who claim that"only the guilty hide". I think we see enough happening in the world today Every Day from both a political and corporate standpoint to know with abundant clarity that more than ever the concept of "who watches the watchers" is null and void.

And to answer Point Zero and others like that, I use Tor because I'm not a naive and misguided sheep like you.

You know how telephone marketers just don't take no for an answer so you have to disconnect the phone in their ear? Online marketers are just the same and will relentlessly data mine the eeby-jeebies out of you despite opting out repeatedly. So they cleverly got together and conspired a way to make the privacy and security conscious people look silly for wanting to protect their privacy. They cleverly came up with the "tinfoil hat" phenomenon to make people who wanted to protect their privacy seem paranoid and goofy looking to the end users. Well Tor is a very good tinfoil hat that keeps Facebook, Google, Skype, Java, and Adobe Flash from recording sessions that you want to keep private. The fact that it is reported by others that the nosy Government wants to packet sniff Tor traffic is a testimony to the fact that it works well too.

The idea of this program is nice but what if any of the nodes confiscate the data raw on his computer and decodes it later you simply don't have any idea what people are doing with the data you're relaying with TOR.

Tor:
You -> Router(node1) -> Router(node2) -> Router(node3) -> Destination
even if Node 1 & 2 get only "encrypted" data, number 3 will have to decode it before sending it to the destination because else the connection will not be made.

Proxy
You -> Proxy -> Destination

Actually the same idea but without all the nodes in between.

It is more about obfuscating your own ip address. It is not intended to create a "I can do anything & everything I want over the internet session and no one will know my ip" solution. Only idiots like poster below would assume that and then bash the prog.
For secure "communication" as in person to person, encryption (sha1-minimum) is required on both ends. OBVIOUSLY every single bit a pc sends or receives over the net CAN NOT be encrypted. DUHH
I see no problem with this software but only with those who do not understand computers and their relationship to the internet itself.
Personally? I leave it running just for IE's default settings for the simple fact that many processes will use those settings without you even knowing they are doing so to begin with. This works ONLY with http & https I believe.
In effect the soft is not about protecting your lack of intelligence in using a pc over the net, but more about obfuscating specific protocol ip address sources.

Then open IE's advanced lan settings
http://www.privoxy.org/user-manual/startup.html

TOR (=tunnel) is a tool for anonymity! but right now, it's sad to say that this "Tunnel" is

far away from perfection!!

The reason that this "Tunnel" isn't safe, mainly because this TOR (=tunnel) wasn't encrypted

between "source - to - TOR - to - destination" and unknown other leaking TOR and other

weakness.

@Point Zero
[..] So, once again, you're more secure browsing 'normally' than using this honeypot network

called TOR. [..]

"That is Totally Wrong!!!"

With normally browsing you will be hunted by "Dingo, Tiger, Lion, Crocodile and even T-Rex"

(it's Scary, isn't it?)

With Using TOR (=Tunnel) you may escape from among of above them! but you wiil be hunted by

"Dragon, Werewolf, Resident of Evil, Elien and even Online PREDATOR!!!" cause these

"creatures" are more likely stay live in dark Tunnels rather outside. :D

As for a silver bullet itself is good to kill werewolf! but what about other creatures that

live in that dark tunnels??? also the tunnels is so far, while we driving so slow, we could

be dead in the middle of tunnels before we reach the destination. LoL!

So my opinion is "both" are unsafe! and that is the truth!!!

Which one will you choose? it is up to you.

1st) YES! My knowledge and opinion is based on experience and knowledge from others, I'm not that person to live in my own dreamworld, I'm more interested in the truth.

2nd) I don't use TOR, so I know whatever information goes to and from my system can be intercepted. What benefit would TOR give me ? First of all, everything between my system and the first TOR client is just as other traffic, unencrypted, ISP's are tapping 24/7 all traffic of suspected people, so that alone makes your anonimity equal to 0 (ZERO) Null punkt null.

3rd) Browsing the internet normally, all my traffic passes trough hops, which have no meaning in logging normal activity. Using TOR on the other hand, more than 70% of TOR-endnodes do log everything that goes unencrypted between them and your regular destination.

So, once again, you're more secure browsing 'normally' than using this honeypot network called TOR.

Ok, I think I should at least write a short comment..., @PointZero: No question, in the existing form there are (very...) weak parts of TOR which need to be changed/modified. But I wrote: The i d e a of TOR is fantastic, which does not mean the actual program. And also once again (BTW: why did you not write a single word to the fact that privacy is worth to be protected?): Usually I use programs to protect privacy, although not all existing programs, of course. But there have to be more projects which stop the nowadays sell-off of privacy. Too many people have become suggestible, were corrupted by 'institutions' preaching of either "everything is ok, no need to fear - so why such closed private lives?" or "Terrorists are everywhere, so stop protecting privacy and allow us to prove you are none of them!" (BTW, do you know persons/institutions telling such JUNK??? I DO, sad to say! And even more sad: This trend makes its way around our planet!). So I prefer to motivate people working on such project instead of discouraging them.

First of all, yes I do use security apps like anti-virus or firewall, I do close my door at night.
What is the point of using this TOR network ?
Why do we all pay for a fast connection, what is so special about the TOR network for you to have a very fast internet connection and your choice to go surfing at the speed of the 80's, remember your good old 14.4Kbps modem ? Why, for example waiting 4 minutes for the amazon.com page to be loaded when you have the hardware and bandwidth to do this in 2 seconds ? Security ? What security ? "My connection is secure" you say .... Yeah, at the "speed" of the TOR network, investigation agencies decrypt that so called secure protocol even faster than you actually got it into your browser .....
Intelligence services set up rogue exit nodes to sniff data from the Tor network.
So, what is left ? I'm really interested.

1st thing is, 99.97% of all Tor-traffic is porn, most of this even illegal childporn, and other illegal porn activities.

2nd thing is, more than 70% of so called Tor-nodes, are installed on hackers- and other miscreants- computers to lure unknowning users into a false sense of security, all traffic is being logged AND decrypted.

One example of how stupid you can be to surf using TOR : http://www.theage.com.au...1/12/1194766589522.html

I might have nothing to hide but that doesn't mean I don't have things of value to third parties - everyone from google up is gathering information I don't want them to from my online activities or my personal information, and selling them on. Tor is a very excellent and useful tool. I used to use Your Freedom for my anonymous browsing. Even though the connections tend to be more stable and quicker because your connections tunneled directly through their servers, the 8kb cap on free accounts was enough for me to drop it in favor of Tor once I found it.

Sadly it can be hard to achieve good speeds over Tor sometimes, but with a little patience Tor can usually manage fairly well.

Only flaw in Tor lies in the bundled Vidalia tool, which tends to lock up (at least on Windows) also locking up Tor, and thus your connections, until you kill Vidalia. However the protocol it uses is open and fairly easy to figure out, once you get past the mess that is the protocol docs. However I will not factor this into my rating since it is a separate app.

alright? kidding themselves? Bottom line is your ip is not shown PERIOD. Use vidalia.exe (instead of torcp) instead so you can tray it.

dzjepp - That's why you should never log into any website without using SSL. You hardly need to be using Tor to have a problem sending clear text passwords across the internet!

dzjepp

dzjepp reviewed v0.1.1.12 Alpha on Jan 17, 2006

Take this as you will, but...

(quoted from a slashdot poster)

"Just by running a tor node, you get the opportunity to collect login+password information for any non-ssl site tor users log into. You also get to see cookie information to boot. Hey, at some point, the traffic has to exit the tor obfuscation network, and if you run a node, you're going to get a bunch of that traffic. It's only a matter of time."

This program rocks for surfing anonymously, probably the best option we have (imho), and it's free.

Add xyzproxy for Firefox and Privoxy and your set.

Beware of running a Tor server on a non server version of Windows. It crashes after about an hour. The Tor team, as far as I understand, doesn't know why.

I got dozens of suggestions and network registry tweaks to try and keep the server up, but to no avail... and believe me, I tried for 3 days.

Added -> Jan 2006

I agree with dzjepp, there are problems. Perhaps in the future, exit nodes will be have some degree of privacy, hosted by EFF or the like.

Comit

Comit reviewed v0.1.1.12 Alpha on Jan 12, 2006

Its alright, but still has a ways to go. Looking forward to final release.

It also more often than not make surfing very slow. Given how Tor works, this happening is kind of a toss up I guess.

It's alright, but anyone looking to surf the net in total privacy is only kidding themselves.

Great program.

Doesn't slow you down to a crawl like most proxies.

Simple to use.

I have not tryed it but doesn't using proxy servers slow you down to a crawl ?
I belive their are a few other programs out their that do the same as this anonamuos webserfer and I forget the name of the other one. But i heard that you never can really tell who owns the proxy server and if you should really trust it.
my 2 cents

If all else fails read the directions! You can use TorCP for a GUI. Very slick proggie!! 5 Stars!

ravemanson reviewed v0.1.1.9 Alpha on Nov 17, 2005

It's so hard to configure (even by reading the manual) that i've actually never bothered. Tor has no interface, all has to be done within a DOS window, so it's not exactly user friendly. Since i know for sure it's the best software of it's kind anyhow, it's worth a 4.

The best 'net anonymous browsing program ever.

cybergen reviewed v0.1.1.8 Alpha on Oct 10, 2005

Excellent. You may have a reservation that the software is complicated to setup, but the truth is that it's very, very easy!

Took me five minutes to set it up and it is running perfectly - the website eve proves it to you!

Excellent product and documentation has been written with effort and clarity (yep, I barely read docs too). If you want to see a bad example of documentation see Shareaza!

This is INCREDIBLE!

Love it!!!

Very good for system administrators..Unfortunately most of them use commercial apps that arent anywhere as helpful and lightweight as this.

This works INCREDIBLY well for an alpha, as I have found no huge problems whatsoever, other than a proxy issue, which I have reported.

5 stars.

Xilon

Xilon reviewed v0.1.1.7 Alpha on Sep 15, 2005

Clumsy, you can always restrict the proxy so that it isn't used for specified sites (at least in IE and Firefox). For other programs it might be a harder thing to do, but as far as web browsing local sites, there shouldn't be any problem :) well... apart from losing anonnymity :p Maybe Tor could implement "local host searching" for this to work

clumsy

clumsy reviewed v0.1.1.7 Alpha on Sep 15, 2005

Ive used TOR for about 6 months and find it great, ive had local servers kick me as they think ive signed in from the other side of the world(which i guess is a bad thing) but atleast it does its job well! To run as service in a few words, copy torrc (search its in application data) to the working directory (C:\program~\tor) by default, then run tor -install to start tor -remove to stop. Turn off tor before doing this.

Xilon

Xilon reviewed v0.1.1.6 Alpha on Sep 10, 2005

aerthling that would be correct. You haven't read the docs properly :) I'm running Tor as a service atm, and it works great. In the instructions for installing it they direct you to the url http://wiki.noreply.org/...#Win32SystemTrayService if you want to install it as a service.

Tor is great, but there is one downside... IP banning trolls is impossible :( lol, it's as if they had a dynamic IP. Small cost for this type of annonymity though :)

If only Shareaza supported this...

horsecharles

horsecharles reviewed v0.1.1.6 Alpha on Sep 10, 2005

It works. It does take work initially to configure all your apps, install other needed stuff, but you get detailed instructions & screenshots on configuring everything with everything, and better still, how to prove everything's working right.
You should contribute bandwidth though, if you can-- this adds speed & better anonymization to the network.

Nice idea. My only gripe is there's no apparent ability to run it as a service yet, or at least without the command-line window visible all the time. Perhaps I haven't read the docs properly.

I look forward to future releases.

Tor really works. Most other programs that tell you that you are anonymous online really don't work. I have tried every free one in the world, but with 90% of them www.whatismyip.com told me the right IP. SO yea, download this or else.
