Publisher's Description

Audio and video codec package for Windows. The installer will automatically remove most other popular codec releases from your computer before installing this concise yet comprehensive package. You won't need to make any adjustments or tweaks to enjoy your media content immediately. Windows Media Player and Media Center will instantly recognize all your files as playable.

It does not contain a media player and it does not associate file-types. With this package installed you will be able to use any media player, limited only by the players' capabilities, to play all movies and video clips. Streaming video is supported in several formats in all popular web browsers. Users of the Win7codecs have the ability to choose what is installed and where to install it using the public redistributable. After installation you can select to remove specific portions without removing the entire package. You can also re-add the removed items at any time.

My choice of codecs, along with accompanying media player (MPC-BE).

Be nice if there was an update download option to include the MPC-BE update along with the codec updates. The update also resets settings, which I hate, I set LAV audio options to certain settings. Because of this I update only once a month, every patch Tuesday. Once they get to the last version of MPC version of 1.5.1.xxxx I'll probably delay updating for quite awhile, because it probably wouldn't even be necessary for some time.

My preferred codec pack (for now). I used to use K-Lite long ago, then I switched to Kawaii Codec Pack because it installed MadVR easily. But they stopped updating. Shark007 updates the codecs all the time. I found the Advanced Codec pack was unnecessary so I recommend getting the Standard Codecs unless there happens to be some files that actually won't play for you. And then go to his Tools page and you have the option of getting the installer for MPC that includes MadVR, or if you are installing it on a weak computer, get the MPC installer without MadVR, otherwise it will play choppy! And it installs MPC-BE which I prefer because the interface allows subtitle and audio changing easier etc.

This installs malware/stuff that you didn't ask to install on your machine with no option.
Avoid unless you want BING toolbar, Ask.com toolbar, WindowsLiveID Sign In assistant and Silverlight forced on your system.

Juanito - You are misinformed and you are misleading the folks who are downloading this.

IT INSTALLS STUFF THAT YOU DIDN"T ASK IT TO INSTALL

Here is the log file of the install - you can see for yourself if you know how to read logs...
The last entry (earliest in time) is the start of the WIN7Codec install
The rest of the stuff is what it jams down your throat.

I never got ANY toolbars from Win 7 CoDecs installed on my machines.
I make the decision 2 install the Google Toolbar on Mozilla Nightly 12.0 Alpha 1 and Bing Toolbar on IE 9 (tried on IE 10 as well but it didnt work at all).
One of my OS: MS Windows 8 Developer preview (September 2011).

@Shark007:
plz include on next releases Real Alternative, Quick Time Alternative, WebMMF (from Google) codecs, n Divx Web Player (4 browsers). This way yr pack ll b really complete.

No malware or other brain-melting stuff in it.
If you are unable to avoid all the flashy "download" buttons on majorgeeks and untick two checkboxes in the installer you shouldn't use a computer or the internet at all.

It's the people who use crap or single scanners for malware on there system that enable DOS attacks to take place.

I invite all Shark 007 detractors to explain me some things:

1) how can you play any type of multimedia file using Windows Media Player 12.0.8102.0 WITHOUT having any codec installed

2) how can you play DivX movies from within IE n FX browsers without having any codec installed

3) to post a screenshot hyperlink of the FORCED malware installed by Shark 007 CoDec Packs.

As far as I've experienced I've opted out from all Ad/MalWare which comes bundled in the developer's packs.

I also did a deep scan using Super Anti SpyWare Professional and the returned results were ZERO spywares found on my W 7 / 8 OSs.

On which paybills are you all listed at, Sirs?

My rating from November 21, 2011 still stands... The installer is still infested with spyware. I'm not sure of the author's excuse either. Plenty of software allows you to opt out of the Bing toolbar installation. Oh wait, now I am sure of the author's excuse: he wants to make money (off of other people's codecs).

This guy does not even code any of the actual codecs. So essentially what he is doing is this: taking a bunch of other people's work (codecs), packaging them into an installer, and forcing users to install spyware (which silently installs associated services such as Windows Live-ID) in order to use the software. So in other words, he's taking a bunch of free codecs and packaging them into a product through which he can make money for himself. Shady at absolute best, despicable at worst.

I cannot stand behind this codec pack. If you must use a codec pack, rather than an all-in-one player such as VLC, then I would definitely recommend using the K-Lite codec pack (which receives very frequent updates here on Fileforum)

Until Shark007 removes his garbage that he adds, this is to be avoided at all costs. The reg files he provides are useless as: they cannot be used before the install so again he forces his junk(He insists that you do a search with the garbage that he forces on users just for a quick buck. again he only cares about money) true, everyone needs to make a living, but he is doing it all wrong. yet he refuses to admit his failing and refuses to fix his mistake. If i could give this a negative 100 or more i would. ALL OF HIS SOFTWARE IS THE SAME SO AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

I also tried a bunch of other codec packs (Win Essential and k-Lite are two among those) but they're pure crap.
So, Shark 007, don't pay attention to your detractors and accept a suggestion for the next releases:
please include Divx Web Player (required by some sites) [it's used by IE n FX browsers], Quick Time and Real Alternative codecs as well.

As a long-time user of this particular codec pack, (been using since v2 thereabouts) I would like to say that this does not have "bundled malware" as some people (or paid shills, if you like) are insinuating.

Whatever adware if any recommended can be easily skipped or declined during the install. LOOK before you click next (*&^ ret***s!).

This, together with x64 components does a stellar job on Win7 x64. Similiarly Vista Codec Pack does a very good job on Vista & XP!

And in answer to a very obvious question I'm not from the US, UK or EU. I'm from the orient, and have no connections to the author. I am a satisfied user, though.

Win 7 CoDecs are as of today one of best codec packs available over the web.
When you opt out for the adware you're really saying them Goodbye coz (on Windows 7 and in Argentina) NOTHING is installed against your willings: you've full control of the software you're going to install (tried on a virtual machine too and the results are the same).
I also tried KLite but, imho, is TOO heavy to install compared with the Shark007 one.

I second that, this should be considered Malware/Too be avoided. Shark007, since he started adding garbage to ALL of his installs is losing all supprt that he once had. His reason is" To make money" but instead of giving the user a choice, he is forcing junk on his users in the sake of "Making money". True, a person should be paid for his work but he is doing things all wrong. Shark007, if your reading this listen up, forcing junk on users is the wrong way to make a living. I'm not a fanboy, i'm one of those people who tried almost everything the available for Windows, since Win 3.1 is out.
So, if I'm cursing is coz I'm tired to read useless reviews like yours.
I''m using those codecs since Win 7 was just a milestone release for testers (actually W7 Ultimate SP1 fully updated) and on Win 8 (6.2.7955): NEVER, I REPEAT, NEVER I'VE BEEN FORCED TO INSTALL ANYTHING BUT THE CODECS.
Obviously I'm not using U.S. I.P.s nor I will, but I tested those codecs over Europe and South America and the results have ever been the same: NEVER I'VE BEEN FORCED TO INSTALL ANYTHING BUT THE CODECS.

So, if you just hate the developer due to personal reasons leave his job outside of yr troubles.

Unless you're paid from other codecs companies in order to reduce the number of the available codec packs.

Why? Coz when just a few packs will be available they could become "PAID"; What option people prefere? AdWare (optional) or Paid (mandatory).

Think about that users who read thse lines, think!

Windows is a strange world where "paying" is becoming a mandatory choice, in spite of all freeware, open source and adware (third option not to be throwed away) software available.

Well, I dont know how is there in the USA bit over here, in the deep south of the world (Argentina) the package doesnt force us to install anything, leaving us the option to install something called Weather bar together to another one of which name I dont remember right now.
No Bing or Ask Toolbars at all, and, most important of all, we're NOT forced to install those bars if we dont want to.
Is it differente in the USA, the Country of freedom?
I really dont know, but if it is try using a proxy when downloading that package and then install it WITHOUT being connected to the net (NO IP found, NO Country selected).
Let the package author earn some bucks if there're users allowing it (we're not all the same!).
The only shame is that Real and Quick Time codecs are not included in the package, dont know why.
Bye.

Dont be upset, rude or angry, just pay attention when installing it: it's so easy to get a FreeWare from an AdWare (at least in this case).

Also needs specific uninstall or will trash your playback. In fact, I carefully followed the uninstall and had problems.
Acronis True Image fixed that in a few minutes.

If you need a codec to play something, find that codec and leave the packs to others.

'Shark' knows this happens yet continues to get dosh off MS. It;'s OK if your passion is playing in the registry but just how many people have no idea how to prevent the toolbar being installed. Install this cobbled together crap at your peril. -5

SnoBrdr,/johngalt & others, hey here is a amazing idea:- Why instead of going into the forums & reading the stickys why don't 'Shark' (apt name) not install 'Bing' if you say no & install 'Bing' if you say well, yes!.

I know this is a totally out of the box idea. (And yes it is possible!) But not if you want £s from Billy Gates.

@SnoBrdr - because he isn't *writing* codecs, he is just packaging them together in an all in one deal - so whenever something gets updated, say for instance, a new version of FFDShow with a security / vulnerability fix, it requires an update to incorporate the new version.

Overall, a great piece of software, although I am annoyed that I now get Bing bar automatically installed every time. At this point, I may have to figure out my own way of installing ht codecs manually so I can avoid drive by installations. But SnoBrdr is right - go to the forums, --> general --> sticky about Bing, and read the second post - Shark has reg entries to never see Bing installation again.

One of the great things about running x64 Components and Win7 Codecs is that the author, Shark007, really tries hard to make his applications work better than any other applications out there. And to do so, he constantly tries to find ways to make the applications better. When he does, he releases a new version. Recently, his new versions have been coming out twice or three times a week,

One of the disadvantages or running Shark007's application is that new versions are released frequently. It wouldn't be so bad if installing the new versions were as easy as downloading and executing the new versions, but that cannot be done. To install a new version, you must first uninstall the old. So, when Shark007 comes out with a new version of Win7 Codecs and x64 Components, you must do the following in this order, all running as administrator ...

1. Uninstall x64 Settings (if you uninstall Win7 Codecs first, you will not be able to uninstall x64).

2. Uninstall Win7 Codecs

3. Install New Version Win7 Codecs

4. Install New Version x64 Settings.

The whole process takes between 5 and 6 minutes.

While I would hope that Shark007 would shorten the process, I suspect that he will not. He has stated publicly that he has decided to leave the process as it is. I'm sure he has valid reasons for this ...but I'm sure this will keep a lot of people away from his software.

Win7 Codecs must be on your machine or x64 Components will not run. For the College or University educated, it is a prerequisite. When I was installing the latest version of Win7 Codecs, I was a bit dismayed to notice that Shark007 has added an OPTIONAL "Bing Toolbar" to his application. Being optional, of course, you are allowed to uncheck the option to install Bing. I did so. I am very sorry that Shark007 has added this option. Unfortunately, he set it up so you must opt out, the box by default is checked. I would have preferred the box not being checked by default, allowing the user to check it if the application was wanted. I can understand why this option was added ... it is a source of income for Shark007, where he had only donations prior to this ... but i am very sorry he had to do this.

I continue to rate this application a 5 as it is as good or better than anything else out there ... but there are areas where it could improve.

If you want media player to play ANY file without a hassle then this is the software you need. Please disregard the poorly informed below. This software does as it says.

As an IT guy I install this on ALL fresh machines (upwards of 50 plus) and have never had a problem. This is a fantastic piece of FREE software that makes my life easier.

@ the poorly informed person typing below me

Some people like to use Windows Media Player.
Others happen to like Media Center.
Yet even more prefer using Media Player Classic.(or any other player)
Well I have to inform you, the intent of this release is these people.

NOT YOU.

The whole idea is to not be restricted to a using only a certain player. And your google search for codec issues stems from 10+ yrs of K-Lite crap people have been installing on thier systems. Its actually my insperation to create a pack that didnt scew up your system. And what exactly does Premier have to do with anything? Those that can afford the $800 pricetag are probably not using a FREE codec solution. And now I just went and wasted more of my FREE time having a pointless discussion with a closed mind.

CademiaX

CademiaX reviewed v1.0.3 on Mar 15, 2009

@Shark007

Using something like mplayer or vlc is much better, codecs are built in, there is no registered dll hell with codecs packs, which if you do a simple google search you will see the problems they can cause. If I were to rely on your codec pack for adobe premier it would crash, simple as that. Check it out if you don't believe me.

CademiaX

CademiaX reviewed v1.0.5 on Mar 13, 2009

use mplayer or vlc, they have built in codecs.. much more stable and WAY less of a mess to clean up.

Tenoq

Tenoq reviewed v1.0.3 on Mar 11, 2009

I still haven't come across a media file I can't play in the Windows 7 beta. I've added VLC because WMP is prone to crashing, but all my video files of varying formats seem to play just fine.

Codec packs like this though are great for the uninformed or the lazy. Like most codec packs though, this one doesn't uninstall cleanly either. :P

Shark's codec packs are very nice if you want any video you download to work in any program you have install. So you arent crippled in to only using one app.

People like CademiaX who write reviews without ever installing or testing the product are also evil but thats OK, I wont try to stop people from reading another useless opinion from an uninformed drone. Its entertaining.

If pcexpert ever pulls his head out of his a** long enough to realize you cant plagarize a codec he would actually have an opinion that mattered.

maybe he should start with an education so he could at least spell properly.

The author even commits plagiarism by copying other people's reviews. It is a silly old senile Canadian.

This codec pack is excellent. It does what it needs to do very well and is highly flexible.

I help many people to fix their computers and always recommend this pack when my customers have trouble playing videos. I frequently get e-mails from very satisfied users thanking me for giving that recommendation.

The author is very knowledgeable and always helpful with providing a fix in case of problems. If you got a problem, go to the MSFN support forums and you will get a solution very quickly.

I highly recommend this pack.

I've been using Sharks codec packs for some time now, on XP, Vista, and now Win 7 in 32 and 64bit. Never had any problems at all. I was actually prompted to make an account here because of the rubbish posted below.

picsoetje, your post here and in my forums only show a lack of maturity.

To those experiencing corrupted M2TS playback after installing 1.0 final
The corruption is caused by the installation of other codecpacks and I cannot undo what they have done. You will need to start with a clean install of Windows 7 to fully enjoy what this codec package can do for you.

CodecPack and Kylde are a couple of a$$ hats. When it comes to reviewing software is it really necessary to 1 star software that works as advertised (and quite well I might add)? I've been using this for XP AND VISTA for dozens of people and have NEVER had any issues that someone with more than 3 braincells couldn't figure out. Thanks Shark007 for providing this excellent FREE software! Everyone that wants to pimp there own preferred codec should just give positive reviews to THAT software leave the peanut gallery comments to themselves.

Kylde

Kylde reviewed v1.0 Beta on Jan 23, 2009

what's the worry with codecs? Just install ffdshow, that's ALL you need on ANY win OS for playback, and in most cases all you need for encoding too. And yes, I've tested it in Win 7

BIg_DD reviewed v1.0 Beta on Jan 22, 2009

Tthanks Shark007. Excellent job on these codecs. Works great on my HTPC.

Its about time someone built a real package instead of all that klite crap that has been around destroying computer systems for more years than I care to remember. Keep up the good work, its appreciated.

CodecPack

CodecPack reviewed v1.0 Beta on Jan 22, 2009

The author doesn't seem to have a clue what he is doing. There is no need to make separate packs for XP/Vista/Seven. A proper codec pack should work on all three of them. A smartly written installer can adjust itself and its actions based on the OS.

This is just a scam to attract more n00b users with a familiar sounding name.

Get the K-Lite Codec Pack instead. That is more advanced and fully compatible with Windows 7 and below.

I tried all the new versions, 32 and 64 bit, I install both. The updates killed my mp4 playback in Media Player. I'm running Vista 64. Anyway, I went back to earlier versions, 465 and 145 and all works well again. Anybody else had this problem?

Works great on my Vista x64. No issues at all and does what it says. Also like the inclusion of 64-bit Media Player Classic Home Cinema edition. With this package, you really don't need anything else!
